Finca La Esperanza is a family-owned farm nestled on the lush slopes of Laguna Verde Mountain in western El Salvador. This region’s rich volcanic soil and cool mountain climate create ideal conditions for producing vibrant, high-quality coffees.
The name La Esperanza, Spanish for “hope”, captures the spirit of this farm. It symbolizes the union of the Magaña and Menéndez families, two coffee-growing lineages who began working together generations ago with the shared dream of building a thriving coffee legacy. Today, that legacy lives on through Gustavo and Enrique Magaña, fifth and sixth generation coffee producers who now manage the farm with passion and precision.
Finca La Esperanza is one of four family farms that have been in operation since the 1890s. Beyond its deep roots, the farm also plays a vital role in its community—employing about 20 people year-round and up to 120 workers during the harvest season.
Every lot undergoes three rounds of selective hand-picking to ensure only the ripest cherries are chosen. The coffee is then taken to the family’s nearby San Ramon mill for processing. There, it’s washed and patio-dried using a traditional yet carefully controlled method that includes a unique step: as humidity decreases, the layers of coffee on the drying patios are thickened. This thoughtful adjustment helps protect the beans from scorching in the sun and ensures a more even, consistent dry.
The result is a beautiful cup that reflects both the terroir of the region and the dedication of the people behind it. This coffee is a testament to generations of expertise, innovation, and the enduring hope that defines Finca La Esperanza.
