Fransisco Cardona bought his farm, La Colmenita or “The Beehive”, in 2002 with the vision to produce the best coffees possible. He named his farm after his love for bees and he also produces honey for the Coffee Blossom Honey program we purchase from in Huehuetenango. This provides a secondary income for Fransisco’s family as well as happy pollinators for his coffee plants.

Cardona has primarily planted Caturra and Bourbon due to their reputation of producing excellent quality coffee. His coffee plants enjoy plenty of shade from his cultivation of chalum, grevillea, and mature pine trees. He is an incredibly resourceful farmer that invests almost all of his profits from coffee back into his farm and community. Francisco is also determined to improve his skills by attending cuppings with our export partner, Onyx coffee.

This lot from La Colmenita was fermented for 36 hours after depulping and dried on patios for 10-14 days. We purchased this coffee during our origin visit to Huehuetenango last March and it was one of our favorite coffees of the trip. It has a silky mouthfeel with a ton of fruit flavor for a classic washed coffee from Guatemala.
