Miller Sarmiento and his wife Johany started growing coffee 18 years ago on a farm they inherited from her father in Huila, Colombia. The farm is 8 hectares and sits at an elevation of 1952 meters above sea level. Of the 8 hectares, only 4 are planted with coffee and 1 of the hectares is protected as a natural forest reserve.

Miller grows about 14,000 coffee plants consisting of Red and Orange Caturra, Typica, and Castillo. This lot contains Red and Orange Caturra that undergoes a 24-hour cherry fermentation and a 36-hour water fermentation before drying. The cherry fermentation enhances the fruit flavors and sweetness in the cup, while the washed process preserves its clean, crisp mouthfeel and finish.

The family knows the importance of caring for their environment and is transitioning to completely organic production. Miller has completed workshops to develop his own fertilizers and has planted native trees on his property among the coffee plants. Of his four children, his youngest daughter, Michelle, wants to become an environmental engineer to help preserve and improve the farm’s ecosystem.
